Record Snowfall Postpones Bowfire in NY

Elmira, New York: The Valentine's Day show at the Clemens Center has been postponed due to the massive snowfall predicted for February 14th – the show has been postponed until Feb. 19th.

Wednesday is subject to a US Severe Weather advisory: "Light snow is expected to begin by early this evening... becoming steadier and heavier tonight. Total snow and sleet accumulations by the time the precipitation ends could range from 3 to 7 inches... with about a tenth of an inch of ice accretion during periods of freezing rain."

All the more reason to come out on the 19th for a HOT SHOW!!!

BOWFIRE ANNOUNCES BEACON THEATER SHOW IN NEW YORK ON APRIL 24th

NEW YORK CITY, November 14, 2007 – The string performance ensemble BOWFIRE is pleased to announce a show at the Beacon Theater in New York City on April 24 as part of their upcoming North American tour. From the traditional fiddle and violin to the exotic Chinese Erhu, BOWFIRE has been impressing audiences worldwide since forming in 2000 and will continue to do so with over 100 show dates in North America throughout 2008.

'Bowfire' more than just fiddle playing

"Bowfire" isn't your typical gathering of the world's finest string musicians sitting conservatively on a stage behind a music stand.

Instead, these top virtuoso violinists and fiddlers are known world wide for electrifying performances, tasteful outfits and colorful dancing.

The company, which will return to the Van Wezel Performing Arts Hall for two new shows on Wednesday, plays nearly every music style under the sun. They can blend classic music with bluegrass and Celtic music with hip-hop.

"People come in expecting to hear one type of music but the doors open and they're introduced to something new," said Shane Cook, a 26-year-old fiddler whose been with "Bowfire" since its inception in 2000.

Back then, when it debuted as a group of string musicians performing in a semi-circle at the World's Fair in Hannover, Germany, it was known "World on a String."

People quickly latched on to the novelty of a company that energetically merged different music styles.

"The response was so strong with the show," Cook recalled. "It just kept growing ever since."

Choreography emerged with the show, along with special lighting and sound design to make "Bowfire" much more than ordinary string concert.

Being a part of a show like this has been hard to top for Cook.

"I'd never seen anything like this," said the Canadian and U.S. National Fiddle Champion. "It's really a dream gig."

"Bowfire" was founded by artistic director Lenny Solomon, a classically trained jazz violinist. In meeting many different types of string players while on tour, Solomon thought it would be great idea to get them together on-stage to showcase a wide range of music, including country, jazz, rock and more. About 15 nationally-known musicians make up the company, such as classical violinist Yi-Jia Susanne Hou and George Gao, virtuoso of the Chinese erhu - a Chinese-style violin.

The experience is of being in the show has been two-fold for the musicians. Not only do they enjoy entertaining audiences, but they learn a lot about other music styles.

"We love to play in 'Bowfire'," Solomon, who has several original composition in the show, said. "It's really a gratifying experience in that it forces us to expand our horizons."

The show often inspires the company with new ways of playing an instrument, especially when it comes to improvising, Cook said. Each night, when each player or dancer performs their solo, they always do something a little new, he said.

While Cook enjoys diving into various types of music, his favorite style remains the traditional fiddler music he grew up playing in Canada - passed down to him from a long line of fiddlers in his family.

With all "Bowfire" has to offer, Solomon hopes audiences will be pleased with what they hear and see. Cook believes the show will continue to broaden people's view of string musicians.

"This certainly is an opportunity to see what a violin can do," he said. "It's an instrument you see in so many musical traditions throughout the world. In this, you get to see the flexibility of the instrument."

WILKES-BARRE — Combining the artistry of dance, music and singing, the touring troupe of Bowfire transformed a typically frosty January night into a sizzling hot night of entertainment in a superb production at the F.M. Kirby Center for the Performing Arts before an audience of 1,100 people.

The talented assemblage of musicians, singers and dancers presented an awesome display of bowed prowess, covering a variety of musical genres from bluegrass and country to classical and Celtic music.

The traveling unit is anchored by a solid rhythm section and accompanying keyboardist and cellist.

All players and performers demonstrated their multi-talented skills to the delight of the Kirby audience, which frequently gave them standing ovations.

The outstanding lineup of violin and fiddle virtuosos provides the musical score for an impressive presentation of pristine sound, creative choreography and a subtle but effective lighting scheme, all of which enhanced the entire production. Bowfire is a night of music, song and dance destined to please the most discerning aural palette.

Formed in June 2000 by artistic director Lenny Solomon, Bowfire actually got its start as a group of string musicians performing in a semicircle at the World’s Fair in Hanover, Germany. At the time, the outfit was simply known as World on a String.

The Bowfire company is composed of virtuoso string players who are at the forefront of their respective styles, combined with equally gifted and respected backup musicians: piano/keyboards, bass, drums/percussion, guitars and cello. Fiddlers in the company are world-class step dancers and tap dancers. Solomon and Broadway-acclaimed stage director Stafford Arima are the creative forces that make Bowfire go on stage.

The troupe’s subsequent performances throughout stages in the United States left audiences clamoring for more, and today their DVD sales, television specials and stage performances like the one Thursday night have spread their deserved popularity world-wide.

The unit’s stage presentation is a two-hour non-stop musical excursion that takes the violin to places that never seemed possible before. Bowfire’s musical menu covers so much musical territory it defies singular description.

The show is slickly produced with no flat spots. If you like jazz or rock or bluegrass or traditional folk or even all of that, then Bowfire is the show for you.

Bowfire’s performance Thursday night was presented in two parts, each holding its own special magic. Whether it was musician George Gao yielding a menagerie of sounds on his instrument called a Chinese urhu or the magically choreographed tap dance routines, the amalgam of musical territory Bowfire covered was most impressive.

Bowfire is a multimedia extravaganza that unfolds before your eyes and defies description. It might have been sub-freezing outside on this Northeastern Pennsylvania winter night, but the sights and sounds inside the Kirby Center had the thermostats up high.

Bowfire starts tour with a bang at NYC's Beacon Theater!

Bowfire played to a extremely receptive audience at the Beacon Theater in New York April 24th, kicking off the spring 2008 U.S. Tour. Top rated violinist/composer Mark O'Connor was in the crowd too.

Musical numbers were greeted with standing ovations and thunderous applause by the near capacity crowd. Violinist/composer Mark O'Connor was in the audience and spent time with the group backstage after the show. It was a great night!

Bowfire rocks Indianapolis at the Murat - and the Blue Wisp!

On Saturday May 3 after Bowfire's great show at The Murat Theater in Indianapolis, half of the cast went out to the Blue Wisp Jazz club where Jazz Icon/saxophonist Jamie Aebersold was playing.

Our pianist Bernie Senensky and our drummer Ben Riley ended up sitting in - totally rockin the house!

It was a honour for us all to meet Jamie - a trendsetter in jazz education and a great player.

"THE GREATEST SHOW I'VE SEEN IN AN INCREDIBLY LONG TIME"

I just saw you all last night in Oakland, and felt compelled to share the experience.

A few months back I noticed that The Roots were coming to town with Erykah Badu. I got really excited, noticed that tix had just gone on sale, and clicked a link hurriedly to find good seats (knowing this show would sell out).

Knowing that everyone and their mom would be trying to see The Roots, I told Ticketmaster to give me the best that they had, and purchased said tickets. Imagine my surprise when I checked Gmail and found that I had bought tickets to Bowfire.

Still confused (turns out I'm a flaming idiot and clicked the wrong link), I visited your website. I have also been impressed by amazing violin playing, and by the time Kashmir came on, I was hooked.

When I got to the theater with my girlfriend, I looked at the tickets and the seat said VI - so I was apologizing that we were in the back of the theater. Turned out that VI was the very front row, as in, the very front row, and we were dead center. I was the tall white guy in his twenties screaming and cheering in case you noticed me.

You are the most talented performers I've ever seen, and I have never watched an entire show with my mouth open before. I was absolutely floored. Your performance left my girlfriend and I speechless. We didn't even know how to describe how impressive the music and showmanship was.

I'm drum for a few local Indie rock bands, and have drug my girlfriend to a lot of shows (she likes country, I like Rage Against the Machine - so we're pretty much made for each other) and she said this was the most impressive show she's seen and I completely agree.

That mistaken ticket sale turned into the greatest show I've seen in an incredibly long time, and I cannot wait for you to return to the bay area!!!

Bowfire DRESSED TO KILT for Sean Connery!

Last night four members of Bowfire played at Sir Sean Connery’s Charity Benefit Fashion Show, Dressed To Kilt at Club M2 in New York City.

They got a huge ovation and cudos from Lady Connery and Sir Sean themselves. The crowd went wild when Kelli Trottier, Stephanie Cadman, Jon Pilatzke and Lenny Solomon went in to the Canty Jean tune from the Canty Medley on Bowfire Live 2007. It was a great show and a terrific party. Also in attendance among others was Andie McDowell, and Canadian comedian Mike Myers.

BOWFIRE on German TV!

BOWFIRE was the musical guest on September 26 performing live on the German television program “Verstehen Sie Spaß?” on ARD, for an audience of 7 million people!

The show is rather like a German "Tonight Show" and the producers pulled out all the stops for the musical number. The BOWFIRE cast was thrilled to bring their world-class fiddling to Germany, and reaction was terrific from the fans, the TV program, and German promoters... who are discussing a German tour! Stay tuned...

BOWFIRE Wisconsin show "just awesome"

BOWFIRE'S appearance at the Young Auditorium in Whitewater Wisconsin was reviewed on the blog Stebnitz Builders. Chris Stebnitz -- one of the theatre's sponsors -- wrote that "I can honestly say I have never heard anyone play so many meaningful notes so quickly and then step dance while they're doing it."

Happy Birthday Sir Sean Connery from BOWFIRE !

Bowfire is a favourite of Sir Sean's, so his son Stephane flew the group down as a surprise birthday present for the superstar. The setting was an amazing mansion at Jungle Cove in Old Fort Bay, which was also the former residence of Irving Berlin and Cole Porter as well as the Duke and Duchess of Windsor. A small audience of close friends and family were in attendance as Bowfire fiddled away...and Sir Sean joined in with a few steps of his own.

Seeing the former James Bond step dancing with Bowfire's great step dancers was a fantastic sight. His family and friends were delighted to see how much he enjoyed the group. They all joined in and danced the night away.

One of the great heroes of the movies demonstrated heartfelt appreciation making a point of acknowledging Bowfire with kind words, handshakes and hugs. It was a highlight of Bowfire's career and a great way to start our second decade of music-making.

Please welcome Lynae Dufresne to Bowfire. We met Lynae last month and had a blast with her. She is extremely talented fiddler and singer and will fit in with our group beautifully. We're all looking forward to getting back on tour with Lynae in Bowfire and performing for our great fans. See you in March but for now...Happy Holidays!
